The Avengers formed in 1961 in Hythe, Kent with a line-up of Terry Hughes on lead vocals (b. Terence Hughes), Trevor Williams on lead guitar (b. 1945), Dave Hammond on rhythm guitar (b. David Hammond) and Ewart Pinch on drums.

The Avengers played many of the local gigs including a weekly slot at Morelli's Coffee Bar, Folkestone.

In Summer 1962 The Avengers played at The Folkestone Town Hall, Guildhall Street, Folkestone, Kent with Neil Landon and the Burnettes, The Vostoks and The Checkers. Martin Vinson (b. 1947) was there and seized the opportunity and offered his services to play bass in The Avengers and was accepted.

In 1964 The Avengers changed their name to The Dukes of Earl.

Summer 1962: The Folkestone Town Hall, Guildhall Street, Folkestone, Kent, England Also on the bill: Neil Landon and the Burnettes, The Vostoks, The Kriptkickers. Neil Landon and the Burnettes had turned professional and thus played a promotional gig here.
