The Others formed in 1964 in Canterbury, east Kent with a line-up of Terry Silk on lead guitar, vocals (b. Terence Silk), Roy Delo on rhythm guitar, vocals (b. 1947), Tony Allison on bass, vocals (b. Anthony Allison, 1945) and Dave Leege MBE on drums, vocals (b. David Legge, 1947, Broadstairs, Kent, England d. Monday, January 16, 2012 of pancreatic cancer).

Delo lived in Devon Road, Canterbury and had started out in another local band, The Swinging Secrets.

Allison was from Surrey and was a television engineer. Legge who lived in Adelaide Place, Canterbury had started out as a drummer in 1960 at 13 at The Chartham Secondary Modern School, Shalmsford Street, Chartham, Canterbury, Kent. He had started out with Delo in The Swinging Secrets, and from the ashes of that band they became The Others in 1963.

There was an article on The Others in The Kent Herald of Wednesday, February 24, 1965. In 1965 Silk left and was replaced by Bruce Finns on lead guitar, but according to The Kent Herald of Wednesday, April 27, 1966,

Silk was still on guitar and not Finns.

 In 1965 The Others got their big break by way of The Margate Carnival Beat Group Contest that took place on Friday, June 25, 1965, they beat seven other groups to win the first prize, a contract with EMI. They decided on a name change and became The Ways and Means formed in Early 1965 in Canterbury, east Kent.

They then recorded two Surf songs The Beach Boys smash hit song 'Little Deuce Coupe' and 'Little Old Lady From Pasadena' a hit for fellow Californian group Jan and Dean.
