R & B band The Pretty Things formed in September 1963 at Sidcup Art College, Grassington Road, Sidcup, Kent as Jerome and the Pretty Things with 18-year-old Phil May on lead vocals, harmonica (b. Philip Dennis Arthur Wadey, Thursday, November 9, 1944, Livingstone Hospital, East Hill, Dartford, Kent England d. Wednesday, May 15, 2020, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn, Norfolk, England of complications following hip surgery after a cycling accident), 20-year-old Dick Taylor on lead guitar (Gibson E.S. 345 T.D.) (b. Richard Clifford Taylor, Thursday, January 28, 1943, Livingstone Hospital, East Hill, Dartford, Kent, England), 19-year-old Brian Pendleton on rhythm (white Telecaster) & slide guitar, backing vocals (b. Thursday, April 13, 1944, Wolverhampton Road, Heath Town, Wolverhampton, Warwickshire, England d. Friday, May 25, 2001, Kingsley Road, Maidstone, Kent, England of lung cancer) and 19-year-old John 'Staxie' Stax on bass (electric French Emperor acoustic), harmonica, backing vocals (b. John Edward Lee Fullagar, Thursday, April 6, 1944, Crayford, Kent, England).

The Pretty Things were formed by two Sidcup Art School students in Phil May and Dick Taylor. Taylor used to go to the students' common room at Sidcup Art School where they had an essential item, in constant use, a record player. Besides Trad Dixieland and Modern Jazz records, you could also find ones by black R&B artists, whose records had started to appear in specialist shops. There was also plenty of interest in other students who shared Taylor's interests. One such person was Phil May, who suggested that they start a band. He also knew of Taylor's membership of the early Rolling Stones. Taylor had left the Stones to concentrate on his studies, but he lost interest and he started getting badgered by May to start a band. Taylor had been hoping to continue his studies at the Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, South Kensington, South West London, but he never managed to secure a place, although he did attend for a while the Central School of Art and Design, Southampton Row, Bloomsbury, West Central London. Finally, May's insistence paid off and they formed a band Jerome and the Pretty Things and started rehearsing. They decided to call the band after American percussionist, maracas player Jerome Green (c. 1934 - c. 1973), who was cousin and sideman of American guitarist, singer Bo Diddley (1928 - 2008), and after one of his songs 'Pretty Things.' I think the Jerome part of the name only lasted the first month in September 1963 as apparently May was fed up with people calling him Jerome.

Next to join The Pretty Things was John Fullagar who had been working on a building site until he broke his arm. Bored by his inability to work, he was pleased to be illicitly smuggled into May and Taylor's art classes. He also, loved R & B and was easily persuaded to join the emerging band on bass. The guys did not like his name as it did not sound bluesy enough and so he became Stax after the classic record label. Thus, he now had an instantly authentic surname. Next to join was Pendleton via an advert in Melody Maker music paper.

The Pretty Things then recruited a drummer Pete Kitson (b. Peter Kitson). He was an art school friend who lived in a tree on the common and he brought a drum kit to join the band. The group rehearsed like Taylor's old group The Rolling Stones at Taylor's house at 34 Alexander Road, Bexleyheath, Kent.

Kitson played one or two gigs with the band until Dick Taylor was given the job of telling him he had to go. It was also rumored that the band included future drummer in the Just Blues (from 1964) and The Little Joe Set (1966 - 1967), 15-year-old Jeff Brooksmith (b. Jeffrey Brooksmith, 1948, Barnhurst, Kent, England). Also, according to John Parish, the future drummer in The Clockwork Oranges (Early 1964 - 1967), he was also drummer in the Pretty Things in 1963. This was all before 17-year-old drummer Viv Andrews (b. Vivian Andrews, 1946) joined the band in ca. November 1963.

The band's first single release was shelved until they could find a replacement for drummer Viv Andrews. Jimmy Duncan felt that an important ingredient was missing from the band and that an experienced drummer was needed, one that would inject the professionalism that was lacking in the group. Duncan knew who he wanted and that was 22-year-old Viv Prince (b. Vivian Martin Prince, Saturday, August 9, 1941, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England). He needed persuasion to join the group as he was busy with lots of session work and had turned down a number of bands including The Kinks. By way of enticement Duncan offered him £40 per week and a brand-new set of Ludwig drums. He would later change to Premier drums. He joined and Prince remembered that the first week he received £8.

As for Andrews, his final gig with the group was on Sunday, April 26, 1964 at The Phoenix Blues Club, Staines, Middlesex? His drumming was OK but sadly he just could not handle being on stage.

Princes' début gig with the Pretty Things was on Tuesday, April 28, 1964 at the famous 100 Club, 100 Oxford Street, Soho, West London?

On Monday, November 29, 1965 Prince was sacked and was replaced on Tuesday, November 30, 1965 by 17-year-old drummer Skip Alan (b. Alan Ernest Skipper, Friday, June 11, 1948, Westminster, South West London, England). Things had come to a head while on the legendary Pretty Things tour of New Zealand.

Prince joined Some of Them (Late Nov - Dec 2, 1965) where he replaced Skip Alan who replaced him in The Pretty Things. This is The Them formed by Pat McAuley on organ (b. Patrick John McAuley, Friday, March 17, 1944, Coleraine, County Derry, Northern Ireland d. Saturday, August 11, 1984, Donegal, County Donegal, Eire) and Billy Harrison on lead guitar (b. William Harrison, Wednesday, October 14, 1942, Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland).

As for Alan, he had been to Tulse Hill School, Upper Tulse Hill, South West London. He had been at 16 in The Ivy League in 1964 and then had led his own groups The Skip Alan's and The Skip Alan Trio, as well as working with Donovan and Some of Them (Sept 1 - Late Nov 1965). It seems when The Pretty Things went to Denmark on Friday, February 18, 1966 and played with The Caretakers, Immigrants and Poisons and on Saturday, February 19, 1966 when they played with The Red Squares and Them (the Pat McAuley's version of Them, Some of Them) they had 23-year-old Billy Harrison on lead guitar (ex- Van Morrison's Them, Apr 1964 - Mid July 1965, Some of Them from Sept 1, 1965). Harrison subbed for Dick Taylor. This may have been earlier in December 1965 when he went to the Holland and Scandinavian Tour. He also played in March 1966 on the Isle of Wight. Harrison then quit the music business in Mid 1966 and joined the GPO.

In I think Summer 1966 Stax left The Pretty Things and was replaced by Wally Waller on bass, Framus acoustic guitar, vocals, wind instruments, piano (b. Alan Edward Waller, Sunday, April 9, 1944, Erith, Kent, England). The Pretty Things were also joined by Jon Povey on organ, sitar, percussion, lead vocals (b. Jonathan Leslie Povey, Thursday, August 20, 1942 at home in Barnhurst, Kent, England d. Tuesday, May 9, 2023 of cancer).

According to The Melody Maker music paper of Saturday, April 29, 1967 on page 5 Allen and Povey had joined the Pretty Things. This was reported late as they had already joined in 1966.

On Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, 1966 Pendleton phoned the band to tell them he was leaving the Pretty Things.

Pendleton was not replaced.

In April 1968 Alan left as he decided to stay in France with a girl and was replaced briefly by 20-year-old drummer Mitch Mitchell (b. John Ronald Mitchell, Tuesday, July 9, 1946, Ealing, West London, England d. Tuesday, November 12, 2008, The Benson Hotel, 309 SW Broadway, Portland City, Oregon, USA), but he was too straight and so was replaced by 21-year-old drummer John 'Twink' Alder. As for Mitchell, he continued playing with The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

On Friday, June 13, 1969 Dick Taylor left the Pretty Things and on Saturday, June 14, 1969 he got married.

In June 1969 Taylor was replaced by 23-year-old lead guitarist Vic Unitt (b. Victor B. Unitt, Friday, July 5, 1946). In May 1970 Unitt left the Pretty Things and rejoined the Edgar Broughton Band and he was replaced by 18-year-old Pete Tolson on lead guitar, vocals (b. Peter Tolson, Monday, September 10, 1951, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England d. Thursday, April 21, 2016).

In November 1971 the Pretty Things were joined by 20-year-old bassist, vocalist Stu Brooks (b. Stuart Brooks, January 1951, Hertfordshire, England d. Friday, July 14, 2023) and 24-year-old organist, guitarist Gordon Edwards (b. Gordon John Edwards, Thursday, December 26, 1946, Banks, Southport, Lancashire, England d. Friday, February 28, 2003, Greenford, West London, England from self-inflicted wounds).
