Jazz-Blues band The Sect formed in November 1964 in Whitstable, east Kent with a line-up of Jim Bradley on lead vocals (b. James Bradley, 1944), John Lawrence on lead guitar (b. 1948), Alan Hatswell on bass (b. 1947), Mick Clark on organ (b. Michael Clark, 1947) and Pete Lee on drums (b. Peter Lee, 1940).
Bradley had been vocalist in The Nightwalkers and The Sapphires. He had a younger brother Steve Bradley who was in Steve and the Corvettes.
Lawrence lived in Friars Close, Tankerton, Whitstable and was the youngest member of the group. He was well known as lead guitarist for the Whitstable, Kent band The Rocking Sparticans.
Lee, the oldest member of the group was from Herne Bay, Kent, had started playing in ca. 1959 and had been drummer in The Sapphires.
Hatswell lived off Joy Lane, Whitstable. He had recently moved from Guildford, Surrey where he had played in one of those areas, well- known groups, The Age Beaters who he toured with in Devon and Cornwall.
Clark lived in Athol Road, Whitstable. He was the only one of the five without previous experience and was an accomplished musician. He had been taught the piano and he switched to the organ in ca. July 1965.
On Thursday, February 9, 1965 there was an article on the band in The Kentish Observer and Canterbury Times.
Lawrence was later in Zobe.
