Instrumental group The Marshalls formed in 1960 in Barnhurst with a line-up of Barry Squibb on lead guitar (b. c. 1942), 16-year-old Wally Allen on rhythm guitar (b. Alan Edward Waller, Sunday, April 9, 1944, Erith, Kent, England) Ear Hole on bass (b. c. 1942) and 17-year-old Jon Povey on drums (Premier Gold Glitter) (b. Jonathan Leslie Povey, Thursday, August 20, 1942, Barnhurst, Kent, England d. Tuesday, May 9, 2023 of cancer).

Allen grew up in Erith, Kent. From the age of 16 in 1960 Allen was in a number of bands in and around the local area of Bexley, Dartford and Erith then part of North West Kent, he had played rhythm guitar in a band called The Echoes before joining The Marshalls. It was in this band that he met Povey.

Povey had grown up in Birling Road, Erith, Kent near to The Pretty Things lead vocalist, harmonica player Phil May (b. Philip Dennis Arthur Wadey, Thursday, November 9, 1944, Livingstone Hospital, East Hill, Dartford, Kent England d. Wednesday, May 15, 2020, Hospital, King's Lynn, Norfolk, England of complications following hip surgery after a cycling accident) and Wally Allen. Povey had been to Bexleyheath Secondary Modern School, Graham Road, Bexleyheath, Kent.

In 1962 Allen and Povey joined another local band Bern Elliott and the Fenmen (formed in 1961 in Erith).

Bern Elliott (b. Bernard Michael Elliott, Tuesday, November 17, 1942, Erith, Kent, England) was the cousin of The Pretty Things lead vocalist Phil May.
